Andrew Hill passes away

April 23, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I was saddened to read that Andrew Hill passed away on Friday. I had only just seen him perform in Manhattan a few weeks ago. Now he is gone. Apparently, he had been battling lung cancer for years. Here’s a link to a brief obit from the LATimes:

I know it’s a big file, but trust me, it’s worth it. Musically one of the best shows I have ever done.

Internet Radio Under Attack!

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The future of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites, including college stations like WPIR currently not on the dial. These new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times that of satellite radio. Faced between paying these rates or applying for on the dial FCC licences, the durational wait of which will shut most internet radio down anyway, the future looks dim. But you can help. Contact your legislators! Or sign the online petition available below…

Internet radio has become a bastion for traditionally underrepresented forms of American music — jazz, blues, folk, country, bluegrass. Those genres could soon be disappearing from our airwaves.
