Bop and Beyond celebrates Ellington and Armstong tonight~!

On April 3rd and 4th, 1961, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong convened together for an unprecedented and historic jazz summit at the RCA Studios in New York City. Although the two had performed together on the rare occasion, no one prior to 1961 ever thought to put the two in the studio together despite them sharing a deep admiration for one another and, for a few years in the fifties, the same manager. Thankfully, Bob Thiele — himself a visionary record producer for such labels as Signature, Impulse, and Decca — was finally able to make the deal through Roulette Records and we now have this lasting document wherein two of the all-time great jazz masters share the studio: Louis Armstrong singing and playing trumpet with his All-Stars on support and featuring Duke Ellington on the piano as they breeze their way through a selection from Duke’s songbook. This is jazz heaven!
