The Von Freeman/Jimmy Cobb Connection Explored…

Von Freeman’s latest album, the appropriately titled Good Forever, finds the venerable elder stateman of Chicago jazz once again in the company of legendary jazz drummer, and lone surviving member of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue band, Jimmy Cobb. These two men, both well into the twilight of their careers, share a rapport and swing that absolutely refuses to age. At 85, Von Freeman plays with a fire and spark often missing amongst his younger compatriots. At 78, Jimmy Cobb keeps rhythm with the softest, most delicate touch imaginable. Together they have recorded an album of ballads and blues that will remain as they have. Simply, Good Forever.

Join me this Wednesday (07/18/07) at 6pm as I explore the Von Freeman/Jimmy Cobb connection on two recent albums from Premonition Records: the afore-mentioned Good Forever and a previous collection of burners entitled The Great Divide. Two records that stand as proof that no matter how old you are, no matter how much or how little you have previously accomplished, the ability to create great work lies within you at all times.
