Duke Ellington.
Renowned composer. Master pianist. Accomplished band leader.

The majority of Ellington’s career was spent fronting his own orchestra: the acclaimed Duke Ellington Big Band. This edition of Bop and Beyond however will focus on his smaller group contributions. Tonight you will hear Duke in a variety of smaller group settings: solo, duet, trio, quartet, sextet, and nonet. Including his famous recordings with John Coltrane and Max Roach/Charles Mingus, as well as a terrific duet with Earl “Fatha” Hines.
Won’t you join me?

Two of my all-time favorite tenor players share back to back birthdays! The first hour of tonight’s edition of Bop and Beyond will be a big birthday bash in their memory. If you’ve never heard either man you are in for a treat!

Stanley Turrentine, April 5th, 1934. A soulful, bluesy wailer at home with hard bop, funk, and gospel.

Charlie Rouse, April 6th, 1924. Monk’s main man: skillful, adept, with an instantly identifiable sound.
Also tonight, music from Lee Morgan, Oliver Nelson, Zoot Sims, Miles Davis, and more…
