Crime Jazz Month: Miles Davis (Ascenseur pour l’échafaud)

Miles Davis’s outstanding contribution to Louis Malle’s classic slice of French Film Noir: Ascenseur pour l’echafaud (Elevator to the Gallows). The majority of the music was improvised on the spot by Miles and co. while the film was projected on the wall beside them. This is the sound one thinks of when one thinks of noir: moody, sad, and understated trumpet. A somber sound of harbors and bars and shadowed streets. The heightened step of one who feels pursued. Miles captures it all perfectly.

jazzparis

This Friday, 04/10/09, Bop and Beyond celebrates “April In Paris” with two hours of Parisian inspired jazz. From Don Byas to Django Reinhardt, we’ll cover the sounds of a Paris spring– with a special focus on the man who provided its main rhythm and flow: Kenny “Klook” Clarke.

Kenny Clarke lends his powerful drumming to three feature sessions: the Nathan Davis Quintet’s exquisite The Hip Walk, Dexter Gordon’s legendary summit with Bud Powell entitled Our Man In Paris, and the Miles Davis classic film score Ascenseur Pour L’échafaud.
